Is a 2.5 ton AC the right size for your home?

A 2.5 ton air conditioner moves 30,000 BTU of heat out of your home every hour. In Florida that typically fits about 1,200 to 1,500 square feet. It is common in two- and three-bedroom homes, smaller ranch homes and many 1980s and 1990s Port Charlotte and North Port block homes.

The 2.5 ton system fills the gap between a small condo unit and the common 3 ton. For a home near 1,300 sq ft, the half-ton step matters in Florida. A properly sized system runs longer cycles, which pulls more moisture out of the air and keeps the house from feeling cold and clammy.

Square footage is only a starting point. A Manual J load calculation accounts for insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height, duct location and how many people live in the home. If your load calculation comes in lower, the 2 ton system covers 900 to 1,200 sq ft. If it comes in higher, step up to the 3 ton system (1,500 to 1,800 sq ft). Not sure?
