Is a 5 ton AC the right size for your home?

A 5 ton air conditioner moves 60,000 BTU of heat out of your home every hour. In Florida that typically fits about 2,400 to 3,000 square feet. It is common in large single-family homes, high-ceiling pool homes and light-commercial spaces such as small offices and shops.

Five tons (60,000 BTU) is the largest single-phase residential split system size. Above that, homes typically move to two systems. Because it is the biggest size, it is also the most expensive to oversize: a 5 ton unit on a 2,200 sq ft house will cool fast, shut off and leave the humidity behind.

Square footage is only a starting point. A Manual J load calculation accounts for insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height, duct location and how many people live in the home.
